Homefull has truly come a long way since
its beginning, back in 1988. We started out under the name The Other Place in the basement of Dayton’s Christ Episcopal Church with only twenty people coming for shelter the first day.
Today, Homefull assists more than 550 people daily. Instead of just a shelter, we now provide a comprehensive continuum of services designed to help people find and keep jobs and homes.
For years, Homefull served as a daytime homeless shelter and the St. Vincent Hotel operated as the overnight homeless shelter in Dayton. Then, in November 2009, Dayton saw the opening of a 24-hour “gateway shelter” for single men, giving the community two separate 24-hour shelters for the first time.
Homefull provides case management and programming for the gateway shelter system while St. Vincent de Paul provides all the meals and shelter operations. The organizations work closely together.
Our case managers work one-on-one with clients in the gateway shelters with the primary goal of moving them into appropriate permanent housing, and out of the shelter system. Homefull also provides educational classes for shelter clients, including basic life skills and job search and employability courses.
Through its community partnerships with other organizations, Homefull is able to offer additional services such as employment, legal and veterans’ assistance, and credit counseling.
