On Sunday, April 22, 2012 the Temple Beth Or Religious School hosted its inaugural “Pizza & Ice Cream Social Action Party.” This project day was a culmination of a yearlong youth community service initiative with their religious school, grades K-12. Students collected personal items and filled 50 backpacks for Homefull clients. Homefull’s Director of Housing Trudy Elder was on-hand with the “Promises of Homefull” educational art exhibit. The event also coincided with Rabbi David Burstein’s 10th anniversary with Temple Beth Or. To celebrate the occasion, Rabbi David hosted a special screening of the documentary “The Human Experience” with its filmmakers. Homefull was so pleased to be a part of this celebration and special thanks to the Mader family for involving us!

Homefull pays tribute to the life, work, and memory of Sister Dorothy Kammerer who passed away on March 19th. Sister Dorothy entered the congregation of the Sisters of the Precious Blood, Salem Heights in Dayton on August 24, 1940. In 1988, Sister Dorothy founded The Other Place, a day shelter for homeless people in need. In her words, it was a good name because if a child had to go from school to shelter they would not be embarrassed if a friend asked “where are you going?” All they had to say was “to the Other Place.” From The Other Place to Homefull, we are proud to carry on her legacy and hope that our work continues to share the true meaning of Sister Dorothy’s action and compassion!

Military teams built garden beds at the Homefull transition home in Trotwood.

The beds will be full of fruits and vegetables in just a few months that those in the program can enjoy.

“And for many folks it is a transitional housing program like this where they just need a temporary place to get back on their feet, get linked to the services that they need and then they get on with their lives, hopefully never returning to homelessness again,” said Tina Patterson, Executive Director of Homefull.

The Homefull holidays were jam-packed with projects, collection campaigns and tree lots! The Dayton community once again proved why this is such a great place to live. Companies, schools, churches and individuals gave of their time as well as generously donated items to our collection campaigns. Thousands of gifts, backpacks and start-up kits were delivered to our Homefull offices and then delivered to our clients. The “Adopt-A-Family” program reached a record number of clients this year, thanks to the incredible number of sponsors. The Holiday Backpack Project collected close to a thousand backpacks carefully filled with needed essentials for clients in the Gateway Shelters. The area Buffalo Wild Wings and Milano’s restaurants once again hosted a collection campaign with barrels placed in their establishments.

Our newest partnerships with Bern’s Garden Center and Fairhaven Church included Tree Lots on their properties where Homefull sold Christmas trees and all proceeds went to our programs. Fairhaven Church members also filled over 1200 bins with items to help a family moving from homelessness into a home. These Start-Up Kits filled most of a semi truck and the unloading process was an amazing sight to behold!

The holidays culminated with a Holiday Party at the Job Center where clients, staff and holiday sponsors/donors came to celebrate and show their appreciation for all of the holiday generosity. Cookies, punch, caroling and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus were enjoyed by a huge crowd!
